Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy
As Physiotherapists, we spend most of our years as undergraduates and our working life studying the human anatomy – bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, the brain and the lymphatic system, and the physiological interactions and implications they have on one another.
Backed by decades of painstaking research undertaken by our predecessors and our contemporaries, the approach of Physiotherapy is constantly being reviewed but we are ultimately guided by best research evidence. Approaches in Physiotherapy are constantly evolving with new research. As part of our professional service and obligations, all our Physiotherapists are required to commit time to professional development which involves studying the latest research evidence as well as attending courses to sharpen or expand their current scope of practice.
From the common aches and pains to the most obscure problems, our friendly and approachable Adelaide Physiotherapists are here to help. We pride ourselves in our clinical reasoning and our connections with established and specialised medical and Allied Health professionals in Adelaide. If your needs are beyond the scope of our care, you can count on us to point you in the right direction.

Vestibular Physiotherapy
aka
DIZZINESS
Vestibular conditions we treat include:
-
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
-
Labyrinthitis
-
Meniere’s Disease
-
Migraine Associated Dizziness
-
Vestibular Neuritis
Our Physiotherapists will assist in the analysis and treatment of problems which arise from a dysfunction of the vestibular system. It involves a physical assessment which looks at the movement of the eyes and the corresponding balance sensors in each ear.
The treating Physiotherapists will then make a diagnosis, which will then guide the treatment program for the individual.
Vestibular rehabilitation can sometimes take only one session but for others, this rehabilitation process will take months.
DO NOTE: The vestibular assessment can provoke symptoms and it is important you are made aware of this. Plenty of time is given to complete the assessment to ensure you are able to manage.
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
Physiotherapy
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunction is inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the jawbone to the skull, causing pain and impaired function. TMJ is one of the most complex joints in the body and can be affected by a range of problems. Patients with a TMJ disorder often suffer from recurring headaches or chronic pain.
Our Physiotherapists at PRECISION Allied Health have been trained to focus on promoting recovery and restoring physical function of the head, neck and jaw.
Factors that may cause TMJ dysfunction include:
-
Trauma such as a motor accident
-
Cross bite
-
Stress / nervous habits
-
Clenching and grinding of teeth
-
Muscle imbalances
-
Rheumatoid arthritis
-
Osteoarthritis
-
Arthritis
-
Posture
Physiotherapy treatment can vary from simple advice to extensive therapy. An initial assessment with one of our physiotherapists will see how it is affecting your everyday activities, and a personalised treatment program will be developed which may include:
-
Prescribing exercises to relieve pain and stiffness and improve muscle strength
-
Electrotherapy treatments to generate heat and deep tissue stimulation to promote healing and provide pain relief
-
Ergonomic adaptations in your home and workplace.
-
Dry Needling
-
Manipulations
-
Stress management
Headaches
Headache is a sophisticated type of pain. It may have several causes and can be difficult to diagnose and treat. However, there is an accumulation of research evidence that suggests a significant proportion of headaches are a result of dysfunction of the neck musculature. There is also evidence that physiotherapy can help with this type of headache.
One or more of the following points could suggest that your neck is causing the headache:
-
Headache associated with neck pain
-
Headache brought on or worsened by neck movement or staying in the same position for a long time e.g at a computer
-
Headache which always feels worse on the same side of your head
-
Headache eased by pressure to the base of the skull.
-
Headache which persists after your doctor has checked for other causes
An experienced physiotherapist will be able to determine if your neck is causing or contributing to the headaches. Physiotherapists may use:
-
Mobilisation of the joints and muscles in your neck
-
Manipulation
-
Functional and rehabilitative exercises
-
Postural assessment, correction and advice
-
Electrotherapy
Your physiotherapist can also offer you self-management advice on ways to resolve the cause of headaches, such as ergonomic advice, furniture adjustment, relaxation and exercise prescription.
Your physiotherapist could also assist with identifying other types of headaches such as migraines and cluster headaches.
Chronic Pain
